A curious application for Bonfiglioli gearboxes was noted during a recent historical Formula 1 car race.
To coincide with the annual 'Ferrari Days' meeting, twenty lucky owners of historical Ferrari Formula 1 cars dating from 1970 to the present day, met for an exhibition-race at the Mugello racetrack. Technical assistance was provided by a team of specialist mechanics from the Ferrari factory at Maranello.
Though now driven by cautious gentlemen drivers, these magnificent machines were once handled by Formula 1 champions of the calibre of Niki Lauda, Alain Prost, Nigel Mansell and Jean Alesi, when they won races all over the world and worked wonders for the image of Italian technology.
A special device is needed to start the engines of these Formula 1 machines. This consists of a mechanical arm with a drive system comprising a Bonfiglioli C102 series coaxial gearbox, with a reduction ratio low enough to turn the engine drive shaft at high speed.
The starting arm turns the engine through the car's own gearbox, spinning it up until it fires and starts.
Historical Formula 1 racing takes place at Europe's top five racetracks, and the Ferrari mechanics team is always on hand to provide technical support for the fortunate owner-drivers of these classic automobile jewels.
So Bonfiglioli gearboxes demonstrate their technical quality and reliability even in this demanding context, and here too they satisfy the needs of users who habitually demand the best in terms of technology and performance.
