Bonfiglioli & Siemens Gamesa

A renewable energy collaboration between Bonfiglioli and the Spanish company Siemens Gamesa.

Bonfiglioli's expertise in integrated applications dedicated to the wind energy industry, combined with the experience of Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy in constructing turbines, motivated the two companies to activate a shared project, which allowed Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy to finalize its SG5X product, implementing the most competitive LCoE (Lower Cost of Energy) feasible.

The Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy company was founded in 2017, the result of a merger between Siemens Wind Power and Gamesa. Today it has become a leading provider of wind energy solutions, with numerous customers worldwide. 

The company is recognized as a pioneering and innovative performer in the renewable energy sector, with over 107 GW installed in 75 countries. Its strategic mission is to continue to create clean energy, in order to drive the transition to a more sustainable world. 

Bonfiglioli and Siemens Gamesa Renewable Energy have been partners on many projects for many years, collaborating on numerous wind turbine projects. In particular Bonfiglioli has always focused strongly on the development of the yaw drive, thanks to its combined expertise in the design and production of gearboxes, combined with years of experience in their application in wind turbines, which has enabled it to become a top player at a global level.

The Challenge

On this occasion, Siemens Gamesa once again sought the collaboration of its long-running partner Bonfiglioli to solve its problem. 

Various challenges have to be faced in developing wind turbines. One of them is the progressive increase of the WTG, causing a greater load that has to be sustained, while at the same time, cost is always one of the key parameters to be taken into consideration.

The Solution

The above reasons explain why over the years Bonfiglioli has developed a range of options designed to be suitable for all dimensions of the wind turbine. 

This is why the Bonfiglioli 700TW series, the latest generation Yaw Drive planetary gearbox, has been selected to guarantee the best possible combination in terms of modularity, cost-effectiveness and product reliability. 

The 700TW series planetary gearboxes are chosen by many leading manufacturers for constructing wind turbines, because of their advanced technical characteristics but above all because they are able to guarantee the highest level of performance in terms of:

Thanks to this application, with the latest SG5X – an onshore wind turbine recommended for low and medium wind – Siemens Gamesa has succeeded in reaching up to 6.2 MW of power with a large rotor, which has enabled it to obtain a significantly more competitive Lower Cost of Energy (LCoE).
